Before reaching the banks of the Mara River for the much-anticipated event of the river crossing, there are opportunities to observe the herds of wildebeests and their near cousins’ zebras. The key feature is the Mara River and it is not uncommon to see the herds cross the Mara River north on one day and then back south a few days later. As you approach the Mara River, the herds will probably be gathered along the banks, gathering strength to cross to the other side. They must fight their way past crocodiles that have spent the entire year anticipating this time. Please take note that finding a crossing is very challenging and is sometimes a matter of luck. There are instances where herds can be seen next to the river but decides to cross a couple of days later. You will have lunch in the banks of the Mara River, continue following the migration and later in the evening heard back to camp for dinner and overnight.
