Overview
Arusha National Park is a small but very adventurous wildlife paradise. With just 552km2 the park is comprised with a Mountains, craters, lakes, forest, abundant in birds and wildlife, it is a place to be to experience tranquility. It is easily accessible and very suitable for a day trip adventure.
It is dominated by Mount Meru, which dominated the parkwhich at 4,566 m is the 5rd highest free-standing mountain in Africa.
You can either choose to go for a game drive or walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger, either way be prepared to be amazed by seeing a lot of animals up close and the feeling of tranquility in the park. You can also have lunch in one of the designated area for picnic lunch as you enjoy the serenity.
Weather & Climate
Arusha National Park’s climate is usually cool to cold at night and in the early morning and it rarely gets hot during the day. It is important to pack warm clothing for use in the evenings and game drives in the early morning.
Dry season: June to September,
Wet seasons: the ‘long rains’ (March to May) and the ‘short rains’ (November to December)
The park is located at an altitude between 900m and 1250meters with annual average rainfall ranging from 650 to 700mm.

- This is the park in the country that gives you the opportunity to witness animals like giraffes and buffaloes up close and personal, while having remarkable canoeing.
- The park is easily accessible as it takes approximately 1h to 1h30mdrive from Arusha to Mommela gate and 90m from Moshi in Kilimanjaro Region.
Things to see in Arusha National Park
- Wildlife: this is park is small but rich in diverse wildlife flora and fauna, the park famous for Black and White Colobus Monkey, but also other animals like the impalas, warthogs, blue and vervet monkeys etc.
- Serengeti Ndogo: The name means “Little Serengeti”, describes the open grassland, just like Serengeti but this is a small area in the park where herbivores can easily be spotted grazing on the savannah grassland.
- Birds: the par is a paradise of bird life thus making it one of the best birding destinations. The park has small lakes a perfect habitat for water birds like the flamingo, cormorants, pelicans and storks.
- Meru: it is the 2nd highest in Tanzania and 5th highest mountain with an altitude of 4,566 m (14,990 feet) the mountain is visible throughout the year because of its limited amount of mist around the peak.
- Ngurdoto and Meru Crater is densely filtrated by numerous wild animals’ variety of animals and it’s the mostly known point for stop overs during game drive activity.
- Lake Longil and Momella Lakes: Lake Longil is the only fresh water lake in the park, inhabited with Tilapia fish with Papyrus and Mace reed floating. The Momella Lakes are alkaline lakes with considerable algae growth, flamingos favorite spot for food and habitat.
- Tululusia Hill and Water fall: the hill is a hiking site that where visitor will have an inquisitee view of Arusha National Park as well as Mount Kilimanjaro and Meru.
- Fig Tree Arch: ‘Ficus thoningii’ A Fig Tree Arch with its roots reaching the ground while leaving behind an arch enough for a car to drive through. This is a perfect place to capture one good photo as a memory in the park

Best time to visit Arusha National Park
Game viewing is at its best during the dry season from June to October.
The park is excellent year-round for birding, and especially between November and April when migratory birds from Europe and North Africa are present and the local birds have their breeding plumage on display.

The Park can be accessed by road or air.
By Road: From Arusha town to Ngongongare gate is about 32 km.
By Air: It is about 40 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
