Overview

Mahale National Park is located in Western part of Tanzania on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, deepest lakes in the world. The park holds and protect the largest known population of chimpanzees, the jungle and the mountains. The establishment of this park was a demonstration of the government’s dedication to protecting the chimpanzee population and continuation of the work of Japanese researchers who pioneered to study primates, particularly the chimpanzees as the park is home to almost 9 species
Not only does Mahale National Park holds a unique combination of forest, mountains and a Lake but also holds a variety of bird species and over 30 butterflies species and wild animals . No commercial fishing is allowed within 1.5 kilometers of Lake Tanganyika’s shoreline to protect the lake’s native fish.
It is rewarding to visit the park since you may go on a game drive, chimp trekking, hiking, snorkeling, and watch birds.

Best time to visit Mahale Mountains

The park experiences two rainy seasons, the short rains (mid- October-November) and heavy rains (March to mid may) with an annual range of 1,500 – 2,500mm. The park is located at an altitude between 750 and 2,250 meters.
        Dry season: July to October (Chimp trekking is easy)
        Wet season: April and May

Accessbility

By Road: From Kigoma town the park can be accessed by road 128km (5hrs drive) south, the road running south-east of Lake Tanganyika shore
By Air: Using charted flight (Zantas air, Coastal aviation, Air Excel and safari air link) from all major cities and towns
By Water: Can be reached by ship (9-10hrs cruise) via Lake Tanganyika to Lagosa point and then by using boat of 30 minutes cruise to the park. There is also a public transport at Rukoma village or Mgambo village where you can hire a local boat or arrange with park for boat pick up, or public transport to Park Headquarter.
