Overview

Mkomazi is a combination of two Pare-ethnic language; “Mko and Mazi”. “Mko” means a traditional small wooden spoon used for eating and “Mazi” means water. This implies that the water in the park is very little and can hardly fill up a wooden spoon. It covers an area of 3,245sq km.

The Pare and Usambara mountains stand over the park’s limits in the South, providing a stunning dramatic backdrop. Tsavo National Park in Kenya borders Mkomazi to the north, providing a shared area for migrating herds of zebra, oryx, and elephant during the wet season. It represents one of the biggest and most significant protected environments when combined with Tsavo. Mount Kilimanjaro can also be seen from the park, when the weather is good.

The Park is a magnificent wilderness that is conveniently located and is a home to a variety of wildlife like herds of elephants, oryx, zebras, old baobab trees, and isolated rocky hills and savannah forests with umbrella acacias
