Overview

Welcome to Saanane National Park, a Park located on an island in the Lake Victoria. It is the smallest National Park in Tanzania covering an area of 2.18 sq km and it the only located in the city of Mwanza. Saanane National Park was gazette in 2013 and is named after Mzee Saanane Chawandi, a local farmer and fisherman.
The park is the only home in Tanzania to the endemic “De-brazza’s Monkey”. It also harbors mammals like Impala, Velvet Monkeys, Wild Cats and Rock Hyrax. Monitor and Agama Lizards, crocodiles, Snakes particularly Python, Pancake and Leopard Tortoises are Reptiles that are commonly found in the park. The aquatic part of the park inhabits a variety of fisheries life, mainly Tilapia and Nile Perch.

Best time to visit Saanane Island National Park

Saanane National Park has both warm and cold season, warm season is October, with an average maximum temperature of 27°C while coldest month is July, with an average high-temperature of 26°C and an average low-temperature of 18°C. The park is best visited throughout the year, however, during the rainy season is a bit hard to move around the park as no vehicles in the park

Accessbility

By Road: One can drive to Mwanza from Dar-es-salaam, Kigoma, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Tabora
By boat: One can use a ferry from Uganda, Kenya, Bukoba and nearby islands. It takes short boat ride about 10m from Mwanza to Saanane
By Air: A flight from dar-es-salaam or Kilimanjaro International Airport to Mwanza.
